What is Pro/INTRALINK Branching?

Pro/INTRALINK® Branching is a useful design tool that allows several team members to work on the same Pro/ENGINEER object at once by tracking the alternatives concurrently until a final design is selected.

All objects that are checked in to Pro/INTRALINK Commonspace are automatically set to a Branch named “main.” Along with Name, Type and Rev, Branch is one of the attributes that create an individual Product Item (PI) in Commonspace. Since you can assign multiple branch names to an object or set of objects in Commonspace, you can also create multiple design concepts. Pro/INTRALINK then maintains information on these design concepts for future reference.

Branch names for objects are created in Commonspace and not actually set to the objects until they are checked out to a Workspace. It is only from a Workspace that the objects can be modified to have the new branch name or be set back to branch “main.”

Branching process flow. Part1.prt has been checked into Commonspace and by default is set to branch Main. Part1.prt is then set to branch Main/Concept1 and branch Main/Concept2. Branch Main/Concept1 was chosen for the design and set back to branch Main to continue in the design and/or release process.
