During the summer of 2002, Pro/E Central hosted a salary survey to develop a profile of the typical Pro/ENGINEER user. A total of 1,730 users participated in the online survey.

Figure 2. Salary by Degree.

The results suggest that the typical Pro/ENGINEER user looks something like this:

A married male with a bachelor’s or associate’s degree in the engineering industry. He is 26 to 35 years of age and has 5 years of Pro/ENGINEER experience. He earns $60,000 per year, enjoys the challenge that his job brings him, and is positive about his job security.

Comparison with 2001

Survey results suggest that the downturn in the economy has had its hand in the MCAD market, with average salaries down 4% from a year earlier. Hardest hit are non-degreed users, whose salaries fell 10.18%, while those with a master’s degree gained 4.73%. Those responsible for business operations—including company owners, presidents, and consultants—felt the biggest impact of the economic slowdown, losing an average of 15% in salary from a year earlier.

Of those surveyed, nearly 15% were actively seeking employment for four or more weeks over the past year. In addition, users are more satisfied with the challenge their jobs bring them and less satisfied about their salaries and potential for promotion than in 2001. The majority of users do, however, feel positive about their job security, indicating that there might be a bright future still ahead.
